Ecuador's Aviation market shinks but TAME stay on top

Ecuador, home to just under 16.39 million inhabitants, is South America’s sixth largest aviation market with regards to seat capacity, offering 13.52 million seats in 2017, behind Peru in fifth (39.16 million seats last year) but ahead of Venezuela in seventh (11.08 million). The nation is served by nine airports which offered over 50,000 departing seats in 2017, with the leading destination for capacity being Quito (3.10 million departing seats in 2017), followed by Guayaquil (2.66 million) and Baltra Island situated in the Galápagos Islands (0.30 million). Quito and Guayaquil are both by far the most dominant hubs in the country, with the two combined providing 85% of seats from the nation last year, up from 84% in 2016.

Despite this, there was a significant drop in the market of 9.8% in 2017 compared to the previous year. Despite this, TAME remains Ecuador's leading airline. This comes at a surprise as it cut its annual departing capacity by 25%. LATAM airlines is closing in, but for now TAME keeps the top spot.

TAME shrinking in Ecuador as government looks for investors; 15 aircraft serve New York, Florida, Colombia, Peru and the Galapagos Islands

On 1 March 2017, tame adjusted its US schedule once more by shifting its daily New York JFK service from Guayaquil back to Quito, the airline’s main hub. The route is operated by the only wide-body aircraft in the airline’s fleet, an A330-200. Apart from New York, tame also serves Fort Lauderdale in the US, as well as other international destinations such as Bogota, Cali, Caracas and Lima in South America.

Nestled on the western coast of South America between Colombia (to the north) and Peru (to the south and east), Ecuador suffered a major earthquake in April 2016 which significantly impacted demand for air travel. According to OAG data, tame, the country’s flag carrier, which had already been cutting capacity before the earthquake, has reduced year-on-year capacity by around 20% for the last year. In the second half of 2017, the year-on-year reduction will be between 10% and 15%. Incidentally, the Ecuadorian capital will be the host for Routes Americas 2018, between 13-15 February next year.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 15 aircraft; one A330-200, four A320s, three A319s, three E190s and three ATR 42s. The government is currently seeking an investor for the airline, partly as a means to raise money to help with the cost of rebuilding infrastructure after last year’s earthquake.

TAME has various ongoing interline agreements with companies such as EVA Air and Air France. In 1995 TAME started offering flights from Quito to Bogota for Air France passengers. Two years later a similar agreement was reached with EVA Air from Taiwan. In 2010 a codeshare agreement was made between Copa Airlines and TAME.

With the addition of Fort Lauderdale, TAME now flies to six international destinations. The other five are Lima, Bogota, Cali, New York, and Havanna.

For TAME pilots, their operation is a satisfying job that requires years of studying and preparation. This training responsibility is taken by a team of fully prepared professionals including commanders, instructors and first officials. Both in air and land, operating the gear require discipline, experience and leadership. Mechanical, climatological and operational conditions are the least of a pilots concerns, as the most important is to do whatever it takes to get the passenger to their destination on the most satisfactory way. In March 2016, Tame commenced two new routes from Guayaquil (GYE) this week. Both starting on 18 March, the carrier launched connections from Ecuador’s largest city to Lima and New York . The 1,138- and 4,794-kilometre sectors will both be operated daily with each facing direct competition. Lima services will go head-to-head with Avianca and LAN Airlines (six times weekly), with tame using its E190 fleet on the sector. JFK operations will also see LAN Airlines (daily) as an incumbent carrier, with tame operating the city pair with its A330-200s. With the launch of these latest two routes, it now means that tame operates to three international destinations from Guayaquil, with Lima in Peru and JFK joining the carrier’s current Fort Lauderdale services.

17th February 2017

Tame Airlines will adjust their international operations.

Lima and New York JFK service will move to Quite to Guayaquil. This will take place from the 18th March 2017. With the launch of these latest two routes, it now means that tame operates to three international destinations from Guayaquil, with Lima in Peru and JFK joining the carrier’s current Fort Lauderdale (Florida) services.

14th December 2016

Tame Airlines will soon have will soon have a regular air cargo service

Tame Airlines will soon have will soon have a regular air cargo service to the Galapagos Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean 926 kilometres west of Ecuador. From 19th December 2016, a B737-400(F) with twenty-tonne capacity will service the remote islands, following approval by the Governing Council of Galapagos.

In March 2016, TAME added two international connections from Guayaquil. Both started on 18 March, the carrier launched connections from Ecuador’s largest city to Lima (LIM) and New York (JFK). The 1,138- and 4,794-kilometre sectors will both be operated daily with each facing direct competition. Lima services will go head-to-head with Avianca (daily) and LAN Airlines (six times weekly), with tame using its E190 fleet on the sector.
