Luanda looking at privatizing TAAG Angolan Airlines
TAAG Angola Airlines (DT, Luanda) is one of 74 state-owned enterprises President João Lourenço's cabinet is looking at privatizing, Reuters has reported citing government sources.
According to the report, the entities were listed in a prospectus sent to investors as part of Luanda's issuance of a multibillion-dollar Eurobond.
"The government’s long-term policy is that companies which, in the government’s view, are not required to remain under public ownership as a matter of policy should eventually be privatised," the prospectus said.
The extent to which government is willing to divest itself of TAAG is currently unknown.
Government is in the process of restructuring TAAG given its perennial reliance on the fiscus for support. Last week, the airline's chairman, Jose Kuvingua, said a request had been submitted to government to approve a USD952 million capital increase needed to eliminate most of its accumulated liabilities, said to exceed USD1.063 billion. Said debts have impeded the carrier's growth plans in recent years resulting in the current state of stagnation.
Since coming to power last year, Lourenço has set about opening up Angola's relatively closed economy while diversifying its revenue streams away from oil.

SAA signs code-sharing agreement with TAAG Angola Airlines
South African Airways (SAA) has signed a code-share agreement with TAAG Angola Airlines in a bid to ease travel for customers and save on operation costs.
The agreement, which will come into effect on 15 January 2018, will see SAA code-sharing with TAAG on their direct services between Johannesburg and Luanda and between Cape Town and Luanda.
In return, TAAG Angola Airlines will code-share with SAA on its direct services between Johannesburg and Luanda and will include Johannesburg and Harare, Johannesburg and Lusaka, and Johannesburg and Hong Kong in the near future.
The code sharing will allow SAA to offer flights with the SA code on flights operated by TAAG, and TAAG will in turn be able to offer flights with the DT code on flights operated by SAA.
This new agreement forms part of SAA’s Five-Year Corporate Plan aimed at achieving and maintaining financial sustainability in the shortest time possible.
Enhancing trade and connectivity
SAA currently serves the Angola market four times per week.
“This new code-share will enable customers to connect seamlessly from our domestic services through to Angola and gives customers the opportunity of also flying with TAAG to Angola,” SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said.
The deal is also expected to enhance trade between the two countries.
“We are confident that this code-share opportunity will bring our countries closer together and contribute to the development of our respective economies and tourism industries,” said William Boulter, TAAG Chief Commercial Officer.

TAAG announces price drop of domestic routes
TAAG Angola Airlines expresses that the price of domestic airfares will decrease by between 10% and 20% ver the next fortnight. The Angolan airline releases in a statement in Luanda that it had carried out an "in-depth study" of the tariff policies applied to its domestic network and on those routes it had decided to approve the introduction of a "variable tariff" mechanism.
The measure was taken by the board of TAAG and is applied on all the airline’s domestic routes, with the exception of Cabinda, which already benefits from a special tariff approved by the government. TAAG’s press officer, Carlos Vicente, said the decision was based on abandoning tariff indexation to the dollar after the National Bank of Angola (BNA) introduced a new floating exchange rate scheme, which allows the kwanza to fluctuate.

TAAG Signed GE's TrueChoice Overhaul Agreement for CFM56 Engines
TAAG Angola Airlines signed a five-year, TrueChoiceTM Overhaul agreement with GE Aviation for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of its CFM56-7B engines that power its five Boeing 737-700 aircraft. With this agreement, GE Aviation will be the service provider for all TAAG Angola's GE engines.
"For TAAG Angola Airlines to achieve its goal of becoming the most prominent and respected airline in Africa, it is essential to select partners that create respect and confidence from the industry to service the TAAG product," said Robert Bryant, Deputy COO Maintenance & Engineering, TAAG Angloa Airlines. "All engines on the TAAG fleet of Boeing 777 and 737 aircraft are TRUEngine* qualified in the GE and CFM programs. Therefore, it is a logical progression to ensure that they retain that status with this TrueChoice Overhaul agreement. The very competitive proposal received from GE for the CFM56 engines, adding to the existing GE90 agreement for engine shop visits, combines the accepted excellence of GE with a cost-effective total package for the next five years of TAAG development."

TAAG Angola Airlines MW17 Brasil service changes
TAAG Angola Airlines in Northern winter 2017/18 season plans to increase service to Brasil, with the addition of 5th weekly Luanda – Sao Paulo Guarulhos – Rio de Janeiro Galeao flight. The additional service will operate on Saturdays from Angola, on board Boeing 777-200ER.

TAAG Angola Airlines announced it continues to struggle in a difficult operating environment in Africa
TAAG Angola Airlines, based at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda, serves 31 domestic and international destinations with a fleet of 13 Boeing 737-700s and 777-200/300ERs. TAAG was able to reschedule timetables to offer better connections, like Cape Town-Luanda services, with immediate connection to Portugal and Brazil. Current 11X-weekly Luanda-Lisbon flights should become double-daily services, bringing total flights to Portugal to 17 every week. He said 3X-weekly Porto services will remain. In 2014, the Angola government and Emirates Airline signed an agreement to appoint a management team to assist and develop the carrier. Chairman and CEO Peter Hill has held the position since September 2015.

TAAG Angola Airlines announces it has widened net losses in H1 as fuel subsidy losses
TAAG Angola Airlines posted a net loss of $12 million for the first half of 2017, substantially widened from the year-ago figure of $0.5 million. However, the airline said the increased deficit was because of a reduced fuel subsidy from the Angolan government and that operational results were considerably improved. However, the carrier said the latest results were considerably better than typical historical losses for the first half, which had exceeded $150 million in some years.
In the six months to June 30, passenger revenue grew 16% over the previous year, while cargo volumes grew 78%. Angola’s national airline gave no detailed figures, but the latest results represent something of a rebound from previous years. Angola is heavily dependent on the oil industry and has been badly hit by the slump in prices for the commodity in recent years. It has also been affected by a severe lack of foreign currency.

TAAG Angola Airlines announced it had entered talks with Boeing over the proposed acquisition of additional B737 aircraft
The B737s would be used to bolster its current narrow body fleet of just four B737-700s and one B737-700(M) used to serve the airline's African network of twenty-two destinations both local and regional. Given the limited size of its long-haul network, the shift towards B737s will also allow TAAG to potentially replace and dispose of some of its unwanted, older model B777s. However, the plan to acquire the Boeing narrow bodies depends on TAAG being able to secure US EXIM Bank financing; a facility whose long-term availability under the Trump administration is still unclear.

TAAG Airlines announced it had launched flights between Luanda (LAD) and Maputo (MPM) on 2 November.
The 2,786-kilometre Angola-Mozambique capital connection will be operated by the airline’s 737-700s twice-weekly (Wednesdays and Fridays). The inaugural flight touched down in Maputo 10 minutes behind its scheduled arrival time of 14:00, despite having departed Luanda 40 minutes after its planned 09:50 departure slot. This is a part of the new schedule and aimed at permanent improvement of the provision of its services and Diversification of destinations. Boeing 737-700 NG flights offers immediate connections to the cities of Lisbon, Porto, Sao Paulo / Rio de Janeiro and Sal / Havana on the same days.
The route will not face direct competition when referring to OAG schedules, with Airlink, Ethiopian Airlines, Fastjet Mozambique, Kenya Airlines, Kaya Airlines and South African Airways being the only African airlines flying to Maputo airport.

TAAG Angola Airlines announced that EASA, the Aviation Safety Oversight body for Europe, was granted “Third Country Operator” (TCO) status.
TAAG is now free to apply for individual commercial permits to any of the EU Member states and is on the same level as any major foreign airline flying into Europe. The result of an inspection and audit process earlier in the year, the EASA TCO approval covers the operation of all the aircraft types owned by TAAG Angola Airlines - the Boeing 777-300ER, the Boeing 777-200ER and the Boeing 737-700. TAAG currently serves 17 domestic and 25 international destinations, in Africa, South America, Europe and Asia with a fleet of 13 aircraft, of which eight are Boeing 777, triple seven. The company operates in the Lisbon, Porto, Beijing, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Havana, Cape Town, Johannesburg, São Tomé, Praia, Brazzaville, Bangui, Douala, Harare, Windhoek and from Wednesday in Maputo. In addition to domestic routes, it operates in code share with local flag carriers to Paris, London, Frankfurt, Brussels, Nairobi and Casablanca.
