Airplanes grounded in Kenya
Skyward express is among the affected airlines by the grounding of flights n Kenya. Miraa traders are counting losses running into millions of shillings after the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) yesterday grounded three planes scheduled to ferry the product to Somalia. Drama ensued at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as traders tried to convince KCAA officers to clear the aircraft.
The Wilson Airport-based airlines, allegedly flouted regulations by operating as cargo planes yet they are licensed to carry passengers. Investigations by People Daily established that the three different airlines were blocked from flying by two KCAA inspectors at 5am. They had camped at the facility since midnight on Wednesday. More than 30 tonnes of miraa, which is perishable, delivered at the airport on Wednesday evening was yet to be cleared for export by yesterday. The airlines operators accused KCAA officers of colluding with their rivals to frustrate them.
“We have now incurred a loss of not less than Sh50 million. It is very unfair for Kenya Civil Aviation Authority to make such unjustified drastic move without notification. We have cargo and passenger licenses issued by the same authority.
This is a great contradiction. We are aware it is because of business interests,” said an operator who sought anonymity said. Although the three airlines claimed to have both passenger and cargo licences, they were categorised as non-compliant. Other airlines affected were Buff Air and Ruduf, who were also scheduled to ferry the perishable twigs to various destinations in Somalia and Somaliland including Mogadishu, Jowhar, Galkayo, Lasaanod, Garowe.
The incident comes barely a week after KCAA director general Captain Macharia Kibe toured Wilson Airport and inspected all cargo and passenger planes. Early this week, a team of investigators were deployed to probe claims that some operators at Wilson and JKIA were flouting cargo carriage rules.
