Pobeda Airlines News

31st May 2018

Aeroflot group record positive passenger growth

Aeroflot — one of Russia's largest airline groups and home to Pobeda Airlines — recently reported positive traffic growth in April 2018.

The airline group which are made up of Rossiya, Aurora, and Pobeda, carried a total of 4.2 million passengers, which is 8.8% more than they carried in the same period of last year. Aeroflot's domestic traffic grew marginally faster than its international traffic, with the former seeing a 9% rise and the latter seeing an 8.6% rise.

Pobeda Airlines recorded the most growth out of all of Aeroflot's airline subsidiaries. The lost-cost carrier carried 523,500 passengers in April 2018, which equated to a 52% rise year-on-year. As a result, Pobeda was named one of Russia's top-five carriers for the month of April.

Pobeda Airlines launches its third route to Italy

Pobeda now offers three Italian points on its network and a total of 16 weekly frequencies to the country following the introduction of a three times weekly operation to Venice Treviso (TSF) on 21 February. The link from its main Moscow Vnukovo (VKO) base will join the LCC’s existing services to Milan Bergamo and Pisa. The 2,066-kilometre sector is operated by Pobeda’s ubiquitous 737-800 fleet, and faces no direct competition, although Aeroflot offers a double-daily service from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Venice Marco Polo, while Ural Airlines flies weekly to the same Venetian gateway from Moscow Domodedovo.

Pobeda has launched its 8th route from St. Petersburg, linking it to Magas. The domestic flight will run weekly every Friday, connecting the 2,084km with a 737-880. There is currently no other carrier linking the two cities, which could mean good news for 2018 Russia World Cup fans!

Pobeda Airlines gets two new Boeing 737-800s

Chinese lessor BOC Aviation reports having delivered two factory-new Boeing 737-800s (VP-BPK and VP-BPL) to Russian LCC Pobeda Airlines in mid-November. The first one has already arrived at the carrier’s Vnukovo base; the second one is being readied for its ferry flight from Seattle.

The two airliners come as part of an order Pobeda placed for eight of the type. The first airframe delivered under the contract, VP-BPJ, was handed over in October. The new aircraft are equipped with split scimitar winglets, and should increase fuel economy by 1.6% while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 530 t. per airframe.

With the latest delivery, the number of -800s in Pobeda’s fleet now stands at 15. Aside from this contract, the carrier’s sister company, Aeroflot, will provide Pobeda with 10 of the type, on lease from SB Leasing Ireland which is a subsidiary of Russia’s Sberbank. Pobeda will receive one more such aircraft before the year is out, to be followed by eight in 2018 and six in 2019. The airline carried 3.334 million passengers in the first nine months of 2017, putting the airline seventh by traffic in Russia. The figure reached 3 million in early September, and the carrier’s end-of-the-year projections put the final tally for the year at 4.5 million.

Pobeda traffic forecast to grow 5% in 2017

The LCC expects to have served over 4.5 million passengers this year. Russia’s only low-cost carrier Pobeda Airlines expects to have served more than 4.5 million passengers in 2017, CEO Andrey Kalmykov told RBC.

The carrier’s traffic will thus grow at least 5% year-on-year. Even the forecast figure is higher than the 2.3% growth demonstrated in January through August, it falls dramatically behind last year’s results, when Pobeda’s traffic grew by 38.7% year-on-year.

Kalmykov said the operator’s 2017 profit is set to exceed the management’s expectations. He did not specify the forecast figure (Pobeda’s 2016 profit stood at about 3 billion rubles, or $52 million). Kalmykov explained the higher-than-planned profit by the carrier’s continuing efforts to cut costs: “For example, we negotiate favourable handling conditions with our new destination airports. And so it goes, little by little, across the board to eventually translate into major savings.”

Speaking of Pobeda’s further plans, Kalmykov said direct connections will be introduced between about 15 Russian cities with a population of at least 1 million. To illustrate the viability of this policy, he noted that the seat load factor on the airline’s recently launched route between Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk, both in Siberia, is close to 100%, whereas previously most of these passengers would normally use railroad transport. In his estimation, the carrier has won at least 10% of its total traffic over from the country’s monopoly railroad operator.

According to Kalmykov, the main reason why people prefer budget flights over rail is the combination of high speed and low fares. In the near future Pobeda will cut its fares by 20% thanks to the recent cancellation of the free baggage allowance.
