Azul will continue to grow despite rising fuel prices
Brazillian carrier, Azul, remain confident they will be the airline that achieves the largest domestic capacity increase in 2018 despite the fact that fuel prices are rising in Brazil.
Azul reported double-digit gains in 1Q2018, as well as recording a total revenue gain of 5% year-on-year. The Brazillian airline has a planned capacity growth from 8—10% in 2018, as the airline seem confident that capacity discipline in Brazillian regional flights has and will continue to remain stable.
One of the reasons Azul are so confident is because of their unique position in the market. Many of the routes within their network have little competition, therefore the airline can afford to change ticket prices without having to keep watch or wait around for competitors to match their prices.

Azul meeting with Amazon to discuss e-commerce
Amazon is in talks with Brazilian passenger airline Azul for e-commerce deliveries, quoting two "sources with knowledge of the matter" and calling it the "latest sign of the retailer’s big plans in Latin America’s largest economy". Amazon is determined to overcome the nations logistical challenges, according to sources, and is looking to Azul Airlines to point them in the right direction. In late March this year, Azul said that it plans to expand its network by up to 35 new cities "in the coming years in various regions of Brazil, as well as to select international destinations".

Azul announces lease of two used freighter aircraft
Azul announces the lease of two used Boeing 737-400F to support the rapid growth of its cargo business unit, Azul Cargo Express. Both aircraft are expected to be delivered during the second half of this year. As a result, Azul Cargo Express will have additional capacity and greater flexibility to provide customized solutions for its growing customer base.
"We have decided to order these freighter planes because we see the need to have some dedicated narrowbody aircraft to support the growth of our cargo business. The 737 is the only narrowbody freighter option in the market and was chosen because of the model's low ownership cost combined with its superior capacity and unbeatable reliability track record. With these planes, we'll have greater versatility based on the needs of our clients, and we will also be able to offer new services, such as air charter. With no doubt, these cargo planes will support our fast expansion," notes Izabel Reis, director of Azul Cargo Express.
The 737-400F can hold up to 20 tons of cargo. With more capacity and higher flexibility, Azul Cargo Express expects to grow revenues by 40% this year, expanding its service offering throughout Brazil. In 2017, Azul's cargo business registered a 49% revenue growth compared to the previous year.

Azul Airlines new Argentian route
Azul Airlines has launched into more Argentinan destinations by adding to its Recife (REC) to its network this week, starting every week on Saturdays. The carrier will servic passengers to Cordoba (COR) and Rosario (ROS). Both inaugurated on 24 March, the 3,977- and 3,829-kilometre sectors will be operated on the carrier’s fleet of A320s, with neither city pair expected to face direct competition. Azul Airlines already has an established presence in Argentina, with the carrier linking Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport to Belo Horizonte and Natal based on OAG schedules.

US and Brazil airline JVs to progress with senate approval
US and Brazilian carriers are eager to move ahead with joint venture plans, following the approval of the US-Brazil open-skies deal by the Brazilian senate on 7 March.
The accord, which now has to be signed into law by Brazil President Michel Temer, will pave the way for airlines in both countries to apply for US anti-trust immunity in order to launch joint ventures.
Oneworld carriers American Airlines and LATAM Airlines Group first announced plans for a joint venture in early 2016, but the deal was contingent on US-Brazil open skies being ratified. Anti-trust regulators in Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay have approved the partnership, although a similar authority in Chile has yet to clear the deal.
"American applauds the actions of the Brazilian Congress to approve this open skies agreement with the US, paving the way for the approval and implementation of our joint business with LATAM," says American chief executive Doug Parker.
The planned joint venture between the two airlines will cover flights between the USA and Canada and Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
Brazil's Azul says it plans to pursue joint venture talks with United Airlines, which owns a 5% stake in Azul.
Both airlines have had some initial discussions, says Azul chief revenue officer Abhi Shah on an earnings call. "The next step for us is to get together with our partners at United and start talking [about a] JV," says Shah. "We had some initial discussions, now we need to accelerate that."
United did not directly comment on a potential joint venture with Azul, saying: "As with our Star Alliance partners at Avianca Brazil, our partnership with Azul offers customers easier connections when flying between Brazil and the United States and connects Brazilian customers easily and efficiently to New York City, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and more.”
Avianca Brazil had previously also expressed interest in a joint venture with United. The airline, which shares ownership links with Colombia's Avianca, did not respond to requests for comment.
Azul's Shah says a partnership with United will be "very complementary", pointing to the lack of network overlap. However, he says any approval by US regulators will likely take more than a year and thus does not expect any material impact on Azul in 2018.
While both LATAM and Azul appear ready to make progress on tie-ups with their US partners, Sao Paulo-based Gol (previously VRG) indicates that it does not plan to deepen its relationship with Delta Airlines. Delta has a 9.5% stake in Gol.
Gol says there will be "no change" in the airlines' partnership, even though the airline broadly supports open skies. The airline says that the existing bilateral air services agreement between the two countries is sufficient for demand.
A Delta spokesperson says: "Open skies supports Delta’s long-term strategy of enhanced service to Brazil and Latin America."

Brazilian airline Azul has been recognised as the most on-time carrier in Brazil and the most on-time Low cost carrier (LCC) in the whole of South America. With a punctuality ranking of 84.14%, as confirmed by the OAG worldwide punctuality rankings, it can proudly call itself the 5th most punctual LCC in the world. Punctuality is measured by the OAG by the number of flights which arrive/depart within 14 minutes and 59 seconds of their scheduled time.

Azul Airlines aims to avoid crowded markets during its South American expansion
Brazilian airline Azul has maintained a positive outlook during 2017 as the economic recovery in Brazil slowly takes off and international traffic shows signs of strength. The airline is encouraged by trends on Brazil’s domestic routes, concluding that capacity adjustments have created a right-sized market. Overall, the air traffic recovery in Brazil may be slower than anticipated, but Azul's assessment is that it is moving at a steady pace.
Taking advantage of favourable international traffic trends, Azul is adding flights from Belém to Fort Lauderdale and Belo Horizonte to Orlando in Dec-2017, followed by the launch of service from Recife to Fort Lauderdale in 2018. Azul is also adding service from Recife to Córdoba and Rosario, Argentina in 2018, as it selectively adds regional routes in South America.
The airline’s strategy for expansion in South America is to look for opportunities where it can attain a viable competitive position, which means Azul is not looking to expand into already crowded markets.

Ethiopian And Azul Brazilian Airlines Enter Codeshare Agreement
Africa’s largest airline group, Ethiopian Airlines and Azul Brazilian Airlines have entered a codeshare agreement effective Oct, 01, 2017. Through the codeshare partnership Ethiopian Airlines will add its flight code (ET) in Azul’s operations; hence, customers will be able to purchase tickets directly from Ethiopian Airlines sales channels to fly to seven Brazilian destinations operated by Azul. Reciprocally, Azul airlines will market on Ethiopian vast network throughout Africa and beyond.

Initially, Ethiopian Airlines may place its code in Azul’s operations from São Paulo (Guarulhos) to Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Goiania, Porto Alegre, Cuiabá, Foz do Iguaçu and Florianopolis. The routes offer fast and convenient connections for customers leaving Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, to São Paulo. Moreover, the agreement works reciprocally; allowing both Airlines Customers to enjoy connectivity in their respective Hubs.
Ethiopian Airlines currently flies to more than 100 international passenger and cargo destinations in 5 continents, out of which 55 are in Africa. Azul, in turn, concentrates its two largest distribution centers in São Paulo (Viracopos) and Belo Horizonte with more than 200 departures for more than 80 Brazilian destinations.

Azul and JetBlue announce codeshare agreement
Seamless Connections from Brazil to many destinations in the US via Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. Azul announced its new partnership with JetBlue Airways through a unilateral codeshare agreement. Azul will place its "AD" code on JetBlue flights between several destinations and JetBlue's focus cities in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) and Orlando (MCO). From both Florida gateways Azul operates nonstop service to the airline's hub at Sao Paulo, Brazil's Viracopos International Airport (VCP) and Recife (REC).
Customers purchasing a codeshare itinerary will benefit from having a single ticket issued by Azul that includes flights operated by both Azul and JetBlue and the customer friendly convenience of thru check-in and baggage transfer."The agreement with JetBlue is an important addition to Azul's international portfolio, expanding our service to popular destinations served by JetBlue. Azul Airlines and Beijing Capital Airlines establish codeshare for Brazil - Beijing - Brazil route
Brazilian airline Azul Linhas Aéreas and China’s Beijing Capital Airlines have signed a codeshare agreement allowing passengers of both airlines to use the Brazil-China-Brazil route as soon as the Chinese-owned airline starts flights to Lisbon, Portugal. Azul Linhas Aéreas has a daily flight to Lisbon from the airport of Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, which allows the connection to Beijing on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Both Azul Linhas Aéreas and Beijing Capital Airlines have Chinese group HNA as a shareholder. Both carriers use Airbus 330s for the route between the airport of Campinas and Lisbon and between Beijing and the Portuguese capital. Beijing Capital Airlines’ flights between Beijing and Lisbon are due to start on 26 July.

Azul Airlines voted 3rd best Airline in the world by Tripadvisor
From 12th June 2017, the Brazillian carrier plans to expand operations to Portugal. The A330 servie will increase to a daily schedule and departing from Brazil on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Azul Airlines is adding a service to Argentina, scheduling form Belo horizonte – Buenos Aires Ezeiza. The airline will operate this route with an Embraer E195 aircraft daily.
In March 2017, Azul Airlines announced it had expanded its codeshare partnership with TAP Portugal, covering service to Italy and Spain. Therefore, the planned new codeshare routes from March 2017 where Azul operated by TAP Portugal are Libson to Coruna, Alicante, Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Bologna, Gran Canaria, Madrid, Malaga, Milan Malpensa, Rome, Seville, Valencia, Venice and Vigo.
In March 2017, Embraer announced that Azul Brazilian Airlines, the largest operator of the E195s current-generation in the world, will be the launch operator of the E195-E2. Azul’s contract with Embraer is for up to 50 aircraft, being 30 firm orders and 20 purchase rights. Currently, the Brazilian airline has a total of 73 E-Jets in service. The E195-E2s will be configured by Azul in a comfortable single-class layout with 130 seats and the aircraft will entry into service with the airline in the first half of 2019. The E-Jets E2 backlog has 275 firm orders, in addition to Letters of Intent, options and purchase rights covering another 415 aircraft, totaling 690 commitments from airlines and leasing companies. Embraer has 100 customers from all over the world operating the ERJ and the E-Jet families of aircraft. For the E-Jets program alone, Embraer has logged more than 1,700 orders and over 1,300 deliveries, redefining the traditional concept of regional aircraft by operating across a broad range of business applications.
